The overall aim of the course is to increase capacities of practitioners to compile statistics on refugees and Internally Displaced Persons, with focus on official statistics.
It introduces the Expert Group on Refugee, IDP and Statelessness Statistics (EGRISS) and content of the International Recommendations on Refugee (IRRS) and IDP (IRIS) Statistics, which provide the agreed upon statistical methodology for compiling official statistics on refugees, IDPs and related population group. The course provides details on definitions and classifications as well as information on data sources, institutional mechanisms, and approaches to dissemination of data and indicators on forcibly displaced persons as well as linkages to the SDGs.
The course is structured in five modules, with interactive readings and self-assessment activities. The self-paced course allows participants to access the recordings of 5 webinars held in March-April 2023 as part of a facilitated course. Participants will be eligible to receive certificates upon successful completion of the course and final assessment.
Target Audience
Staff of national statistical offices, relevant line ministries and other institutions working on issues related to refugees and IDPs. Personnel interested in learning more about compiling refugee and IDP statistics.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the participants would be able to know about the role of the Expert Group on Refugee, IDP and Statelessness Statistics (EGRISS) and its outputs in providing the statistical framework for compiling official statistics in response to the various data needs. In addition, to apply concepts, definitions, methodology, and main data sources for refugee and IDP statistics, know about implementation issues, including data sharing, data confidentiality, data quality, and metadata and appraise the importance of coordination of data on refugees and IDPs to facilitate policy development.
