This course is the first of a series that introduces basic concepts of Big Data and looks at potential and already realized applications of Big Data for various purposes. The courses will focus on applications in official statistics and discuss advantages, principles and rules, as well as challenges of using Big Data in this specialized domain.
It is recommended to use this course as a starting point for further learning of Big Data subjects.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this first course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the evolving notion of Big Data
- Recognize the types of Big Data that are being applied within NSOs, plus others that are available
- Identify some of the opportunities and challenges posed when applying big data to the production of statistical outputs
